Moana Tops US Box Office

Disney’s new animated movie Moana topped the US box office with more than an estimated shs.298bn ($82m) on its open Thanksgiving weekend. It was just slightly behind Frozen, another Disney movie that made shs.338bn ($93.6m) on its release.

The movie is based in ancient Polynesian culture; the story is about a terrible curse that was incurred by Maui which reached an island where the chief’s impatient daughter stayed. She answered the call of the ocean to go out, find the demigod and set things right.

Moana was followed by:

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – shs.239bn ($65.8m)
  • Doctor Strange – shs.48.5bn ($13.4m)
  • Allied – shs.47.2bn ($13m)
  • Arrival – shs.41bn ($11.3m)

We are watching the space to see if Moana will stay at the top for the second weekend and keep down the threat of Allied (Brad Pitt), Doctor Strange and Arrival.
