The Oscar nominations this year have had their surprises and this time around, South Korean film, ‘Parasite’ with just three weeks to go until Oscars snatched one of the most prestigious honors on Sunday evening when it won the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) award.
During the Sunday evening, the Screen Actors Guild gave the highest honor to Bong Joon Ho’s genre-scrambling class satire “Parasite” despite facing tough competition from diverse films like “Bombshell,” The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”
Looking back in time, the only other foreign-language film that has been able to win a SAG award was the 1997 Holocaust comedy drama, “Life Is Beautiful” directed by and starring Roberto Benigni, who co-wrote the film with Vincenzo Cerami.
South Korea’s Parasite surprised everyone when it got top honors by winning the SAG award
Parasite is a South Korean black comedy thriller film directed by Bong Joon Ho, who also wrote the film’s story and co-wrote the screenplay with Han Jin-won.

The critically acclaimed film follows the story of a poor family household scheming to become employees of a much wealthier family by posing as unrelated, highly qualified individuals. The film stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, and Park So-dam.
“Although the title is ‘Parasite,’ I think the story is about co-existence and how we can all live together,” actor Song Kang Ho, who plays the patriarch of the poor family, said as he accepted the award. “To be honored with the best ensemble award, it occurs to me that maybe we haven’t created such a bad movie.”
During the event’s night, many were predicting that “The Irishman” or Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time” which were packed with A-list stars would take the prize. To everyone’s surprise, the “Parasite” was the one that came out on the top despite having a cast that hadn’t received any individual nominations.
This big shift could be a sign of a change of what’s to come in the next Oscars though many still worry about the misrepresentation of women directors in Hollywood as it’s still dominated by men who are winning most of the nominations and awards.
