Adele Breaks More Records With Her Latest Album ’30’

Adele has done it again, reclaiming the top charts scene with another record-breaking return as her latest album “30” claims the title of fastest-selling album of 2021 in both the US and the UK.

The British singer, who released her fourth studio album on November 19 is back with a bang and this time around, her “30” album is the most successful one of the year in the US just three days after release based on reports by Billboard.

The album which was released by Melted Stone and Columbia Records comprises pop, jazz and soul ballads addressing Adele’s divorce, motherhood, and the scrutiny of fame, with themes of heartache, acceptance, and hope.

“30” has already sold more than 660,000 equivalent album units beating the other major releases of 2021. In the UK, Adele debuted at the top albums chart after first week sales hit 261,000 according to Official Charts, making it the biggest first week for an album since Ed Sheeran’s “Divide” (÷) in 2017 CNN reports.

The album’s lead single “Easy on Me” also claimed a sixth consecutive week at number one on the UK singles chart, after breaking the record for most streams in a single week after its release.

Regardless of the amazing feats “30” has hit so far, it is yet to reach the recording-breaking levels of Adele’s third studio album, “25,” which became the fastest-selling album of all time in both the US and the UK in 2015 — selling 800,000 copies in the UK and 3.3 million in the US.

Adele shoots for the sky with new album 30

Given the current numbers, the “30” album is expected to give Adele her claim to the title of the third consecutive number one album. Meanwhile, the song “Easy on Me” spent four weeks in the top spot of the Hot 100 singles chart which only intensifies the expectations.

The 33-year-old superstar has taken a much more orderly approach when it comes to naming her albums. Throughout her recording career, she has named all her albums based on numbers after a significant age in her life: “19,” “21,” “25” and now, after a six-year break, “30.”

Chris Richards, a writer at the Washington Post had this to say about Adele’s new album:

“The world wants a new Adele album to be very good and very sad, but with “30,” sorrow might be the least essential component of what makes it good. As a singer, Adele remains entirely clear about her greater proposition: She has a voice that can do pretty much anything, but she will only apply it to things that are true to her experience.”

Adele, who has shied away from releasing her albums and music via streaming platforms in the past, has now embraced the idea despite the risk of lower physical sales. Her change of heart could be driven by the effects of the pandemic or a management decision.

“30” has received a lot of acclaim from critics and the sales figures seem to reflect the same thing, with 560,000 of the equivalent album units sold in the US being traditional album sales, while 67% of her sales in the UK were physical sales.

Adele told American Vogue in October that the album was her way of explaining her divorce to her son and was very close to her heart, saying she was “not letting go of this one.”
