Known for his talent as a producer and urban-infused Afrobeats, Kirabo Andre quietly released a gem last year titled “Heavy,” featuring Rubana from his Serenity EP album. Despite initially flying under the radar amidst the crowded release schedule of 2025, the track has recently found its way into essential “hidden gem” playlists—and for good reason.
A Fresh Sonic Menu
“Heavy” is more than just another entry into the Afrobeat canon; it is a calculated bridge between two dominant sounds: Amapiano and Afro-pop. In a Ugandan music scene that can sometimes feel repetitive, this track offers a refreshing “chill” alternative.
While the fusion of these genres isn’t entirely new, the execution here is distinctive. The production avoids the frantic energy of club-heavy Amapiano, opting instead for a mellow, bass-rich atmosphere that prioritizes texture over tempo. It provides a “high-end” listening experience that sets Andre apart from his contemporaries who often lean into more formulaic sounds.
Rubana plays a pivotal role in making the song pop as the main voice for the entire song, while Kirabo Andre handled all the production and background vocals – a similar and shared attribute from the producers like Melvitto, where they appear as a main artist on songs built on beats they have produced.
A Worthy Playlist Contender
“Heavy” might not have been a chart-topping “Top 10” mainstay immediately upon release, but its longevity is guaranteed by its quality. The seamless blend of log drums and melodic pop sensibilities makes it a “grower”—a track that reveals more of itself with every listen. It is a testament to the idea that well-produced music eventually finds its audience, regardless of the initial hype.
The Rise of Kirabo Andre
Kirabo Andre’s steady climb in the Ugandan scene is backed by a prolific work ethic. With two EPs already under his belt—Serenity (2025) and Afro Fragrance 2.2 (2024)—he has become a go-to collaborator, appearing on severak tracks with the likes of Soundlykbb, Expect XHAVI, Larry The Stork, Jamil Jamie, Pajen, and Sensuxl.
What gives Andre his edge is his dual identity as a Music Producer and Audio Engineer. He is an artist who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty in the booth. This meticulousness dates back to his entry into the industry in 2020. Andre often recalls the pivotal moment his mother took him to the studio to record his first track, “Namagunga Girl.” He spent seven days obsessively perfecting that debut, a move that convinced him he had the vision and discipline required for a career in music.
If “Heavy” isn’t in your rotation yet, it’s time to hit play. Kirabo Andre is clearly playing the long game, and if this track is any indication, he has plenty of fire left in the tank.
