Netflix Steals Shonda Rhimes from ABC Studios

Netflix has made a move for one of the greatest storytellers in television history by signing a multi-year production deal with Shonda Rhimes who was currently at ABC Studios.

Shonda is known for her successful drama series like “Scandal” and “How to Get Away with Murder” that yielded ABC Studios a lot of views in the past  years.

She also credited for her a medical drama, “Greys Anatomy” which was a big seller for ABC Studios and is now heading to its 14th season this fall. A Greys Anatomy spin off is also in the works.

Shonda will begin producing new series for Netflix while she continues to stay involved in her current broadcast series. Executive producer Betsy Beers will also come to Netflix with Rhimes, one of the most successful TV producers of the past decade.

Shonda Rhimes is one of the greatest storytellers in the history of television,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer, Netflix, in a statement.

Her work is gripping, inventive, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, taboo-breaking television at its best. I’ve gotten the chance to know Shonda and she’s a true Netflixer at heart — she loves TV and films, she cares passionately about her work, and she delivers for her audience. We’re so excited to welcome her to Netflix.”

Rhimes has been a big asset for ABC these past years and now she has joined Netflix to bring in more awesome ideas to the table. Netflix is familiar with the Shondaland milieu. The streaming service has long carried older episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “HTGAWM” in the U.S., and in select markets around the world.

Netflix of late has been busy signing top filmmakers and producers like Joel and Ethan Coen. They also made an acquisition of Millarworld, which yields intellectual property for comics that brought movies like “Kickass” and “Kingsman” to life.

It’s reported that Rhimes was earning an estimated $10 million a year under her previous ABC Studios contract which is set to expire in 2018. Netflix must be cashing in a lot of money to bring Rhimes to their team and at same time cover overhead costs for Shondaland to seal the deal.
