Sony is on a roll and this time around it’s not about its video game division, but the movie entertainment section which has earned it a lot of money.
Comic book movie, Venom despite its low critic rating has performed quite well at the box office breaking the $1 billion mark which has been a sure win for Sony in these previous months.
Venom has opened up a lot of possibilities for the entertainment company with fans expecting the Spiderman universe to grow even bigger under Sony. After its second weekend at the top of the box office, Venom has just helped push Sony over the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office this year.
Sony entered the billion dollar club over the weekend after Venom pushed to $35.7 million in the second weekend not forgetting $16.2 million debut of Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, according to Deadline. This is two months sooner than the studio crossed that $1 billion mark last year and the second time Sony has enjoyed the distinction since 2014.
Venom earned $142.8 million through its first 10 days, which is been great for Sony, but one shouldn’t forget that most of this success was also attributed to 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which was a huge success at the box office hitting $235.5 million early 2018.
Apart from Venom and Jumanji, movies like Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, Peter Rabbit and The Equalizer 2 with $166.7 million, $115.2 million and $102 million respectively played an important role in giving Sony the boast it needed.
Other major studios that have crossed the $1 billion mark include Disney which did it twice and has over $2.75 billion this year so far with Warner Bros. at $1.3 billion and Universal with over $1.2 billion.
If Sony keeps this momentum up, it could surpass the big leads soon enough not forgetting its already making a lot money from its PlayStation 4 console division for more than 4 years now.
