How to Keep Your Swimming Pool Clean All Year Round

If you have a swimming pool within your home or you live in a climate that allows you to keep your pool open year-round, it’s always important to remember that this great privilege comes with some added responsibility.

Rather than putting all your attention on your swimming pool for a few months out of the year, you need to spread your efforts out over all 12 months so that your pool doesn’t become a disaster zone.

The good news in all of this is that if you stay on top of pool maintenance, you’ll be able to take a dip whenever you desire without having to spend too much time taking care of your swimming pool.

1. Invest in a High-Quality Cover

During the summer, the amount of debris falling from trees near your pool is generally fairly low. However, as trees begin to shed their leaves during the fall, you’ll need a high-quality pool cover to keep them out of your pool.

A good cover helps to stop the cleaning process before it starts so that you don’t have to spend as much time on netting, vacuuming, and chemical balancing. Plus, the right type of cover will help to keep your pool water warm during those cooler winter months.

2. Manage the Chlorine Levels

Properly managing your chlorine levels is one of the most basic tenets of pool care. What you may not realize, though, is that managing the levels of chlorine in your swimming pool looks different during different seasons of the year.

Since the main destroyer of chlorine is direct sunlight, you will typically need to keep a closer eye on your chlorine levels during the summer. In the fall and winter, when the sunlight isn’t as direct, you’ll likely need to change the amount of chlorine you use to maintain the same balance. That’s why it’s vital to invest in a good test kit so that you can always be aware of your water’s chemistry.

3. Keep an Eye Out for Repairs and Increased Water Bills

In cooler climates, the time when your pool is empty provides a great opportunity to check for cracks and other issues with your pool. If your swimming pool is open year-round, though, you may not get that opportunity.

This means that cracks can grow larger and leak a lot of water before you realize there’s a problem. If you have a pump that automatically replaces lost water, you could be in for a monstrous water bill. Therefore, if you notice a sudden increase in your water usage, make sure to consider your pool as one of the possible causes of that increase and promptly address any needed repairs.

4. Contact the Pros When Necessary

During the traditional pool season, it’s typically not very hard to remember to take care of your swimming pool. During the cooler months, though, it’s easy to become focused on other responsibilities and activities.

In the meantime, your pool could get so far behind on maintenance that not even a wild animal would want to swim in it. To ensure you can keep up with proper swimming pool care alongside everything else in your life, it’s wise to utilize a professional pool service to maintain it.

This will make you more likely to use your pool during the cooler months because you won’t feel guilty about relaxing, knowing that you won’t have to spend time getting your swimming pool back in shape afterwards since the pros will take care of it.

5. Be Quick to Remove Debris

Different seasons present different types of debris that could fall into your pool. Even with a good cover, you’ll likely find plenty of debris to remove throughout the year.

With a year-round pool, debris removal is even more vital than in a seasonal pool because you don’t get the annual “reset” that helps remove any accumulated sludge on your pool walls. In a constantly wet environment, any debris that’s allowed to remain in your pool could have long-lasting effects, meaning you’ll have to spend a lot of time and money to get it in good condition again.

It’s Totally Worth It

Year-round pool care is worth every minute spent despite the extra effort involved. Simply knowing that you have a beautiful and relaxing swimming pool to come home to at the end of a long day when other states are suffering through snowstorms is enough inspiration to take care of ten pools. Just focus on the one pool you have, though, and you’ll be richly rewarded for many years to come.
