Mulan Becomes First Disney Movie to Be Rated PG-13

Disney’s live-action remake Mulan, set to be released this year has received a PG-13 rating which is rather a first for its kind under the Mouse House.

Most of Dinsey’s movies have never been rated-R or gotten a PG-13 rating because most times their productions are meant for kids and family viewing which makes it unique for Mulan since it’s not like other remakes before it.

When one looks at the movies that have helped Dinsey hit the $1 billion mark at the box office in 2019, two were live-action remakes such as The Lion King ($1.657 billion) and Aladdin ($1.051 billion). The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast, among others, in the years prior haven’t received any restrictive ratings so far unlike Mulan.

Mulan is more of an action movie than the usual musical type of settings we expect from Disney which in my opinion is good news. That explains why the Motion Picture Association of America gave it a PG-13 rating, a first for the live-action remakes.

Since it is an action related story about a young fearless lady who tries to save her ailing father from serving in the Imperial Army by disguising herself as a man to battle northern invaders in China, it’s definitely a good reason to rate it PG-13 as some of us have really grown tired of the dramatic musical encores (except the kids of course).

Disney’s Mulan gets a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America

Mulan, directed by Niki Caro, was rated inappropriate for children under 13 due to “sequences of violence,” which is considered disturbing for 12-year-old kids.

According to the Hollywood Reporter,“Mulan is the first title from Disney’s live-action studio to receive PG-13 since Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017,”, which also notes that “modern times have proved that PG-13 rated features can still play well for families,” including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Part 2.

We can’t tell how this new change will affect Disney’s Mulan, but as long as the movie is good, there’s a high chance it will hit the $1 billion mark too at the box office. There have been a number of remakes and it seems like the Mouse House may soon run out of ideas.

Mulan comes out on March 27, 2020.
