Marvel officially announced that Black Panther 2 is set to arrive in the theaters on Saturday, August 24, 2022, at the Disney D23 Expo with Ryan Coogler returning to the franchise as director and writer.
The first Black Panther film was a huge success for Marvel with it receiving a lot of positive reviews, including breaking records at the box office when it grossed $1.34 billion. It even got a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.
News of Black Panther 2 was no surprise since Disney and Marvel made a lot of money out of the first one and are looking capitalising on the second one.
Ryan Coogler is set to write and direct the original creative cast of Black Panther 2 with most of the previous cast expected to return for the sequel. The cast includes Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa / Black Panther), Winston Duke (M’Baku), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Daniel Kaluuya (W’Kabi).
The Black Panther 2 story could be about Wakanda
Speculations point at the sequel returning to Wakanda which will be the main focus of the story. In the previous one, T’Challa was eventually crowned as emperor and defender of Wakanda after struggling against the rivalry of Erik Killmonger and M’Baku of Michael B Jordan’s.
Unconfirmed reports state that the second film’s script could again include Wakanda, which is being attacked by both Namor and Princess Zanda. This is all speculation, of course, but MCU has been planning on bringing Namor to the scene for a while now after he was mentioned in Endgame.
As for the movie’s focus, Coogler said that he wanted to explore what T’Challa’s role as king would be like, especially since the character in the MCU was different from the origin of his comic book.
