AS Roma has given Jose Mourinho marching orders, ending his two-and-half-year role as head coach at the football club after concerns over poor performance. He has been replaced by the former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi as the new head coach.
An emotional Jose Mourinho was given a farewell by the Roma fans after he was seen leaving the club’s training grounds earlier today. The team has been struggling of late having won just one of their last six Serie A games, and currently sits ninth in the league standings.
Mourinho’s sacking comes at a time when AS Roma has been bleeding left and right, losing some of the most crucial games including its recent loss when it got knocked out of the Coppa Italia by rivals Lazio, where Mourinho was sent off. As of this moment, the Serie A table standings place AS Roma in the ninth position, 22 points behind league leaders Inter Milan.
The 60-year-old, whose contract was due to expire in June joined Roma in 2021, leading the club to the Europa Conference League title in 2022 and later guiding the team to the Europa League final last season, where they suffered a defeat against Sevilla in the penalties.
A Roma statement read: “We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club. We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club. We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”
The three-time Premier League winner is reported to be linked to a deal that could see him make a return to Chelsea, which is having its struggles at the moment too. There are also reports that Mourinho might instead take on a bigger role as international coach.
