Jose Mourinho, who is currently the manager of Roma is reportedly interested in signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka, a right-back at Manchester United.
The 24-year-old right-back is highly praised for his defensive skills at Old Trafford but when it comes to creating chances in attacking and assists, he falls short in that area. However, Mourinho is very interested in Bissaka and wants the youngster on his side.
At the moment, Bissaka hasn’t had much playtime and has fallen behind the pecking order at the club with Diogo Dalot currently dominating his spot. Bissaka has only played two of the last eight Premier League games. Though often praised for his defensive tactics, he is criticised for his lack of quality in attack, failing to provide an assist in 26 appearances in all competitions this term.
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes described the Englishman as a “brilliant defender” but insists he’s “useless on the ball”, while Arsenal icon Paul Merson once said: “Wan-Bissaka is a very good defender, but he will not get you seven or eight assists a season.”
Aaron Wan-Bissaka joined United in the summer of 2019 from Crystal Palace for a fee of £50million. Since then, he has made 126 appearances for the club in all competitions. His existing contract expires in June 2024, although Man United have the option to extend that by a year.
According to recent reports, Bissaka is waiting to find out what plans Erik Ten Hag has for him at Old Trafford before making a decision on his future though, reports suggest that the new manager may not be interested in keeping him.
Jose Mourinho is interested in signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka
According to The Sun, Mourinho is interested in bringing Wan-Bissaka to Roma’s side given the fact he has been linked to several deals regarding right-backs since his appointment last summer. He has also often deployed on-loan Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles – a midfielder by trade – in the position.
At the moment, Mourinho already has three English players in his squad which include Maitland-Niles, Chris Smalling and Tammy Abraham. The latter has been a huge success in Italy since leaving Chelsea last summer, scoring 24 goals in all competitions.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace is also gunning for Wan-Bissaka and wants to re-sign him for this summer in a loan deal since the club can’t afford all the talent’s wages and an eight-figure transfer fee, hence the preference for a loan.
The Portuguese coach was not in charge at Old Trafford when Wan-Bissaka arrived having been sacked by United in December 2018. The youngster was just emerging at Palace at the time and went on to be named the club’s Player of the Year that season.
Manchester United have two games left this season, with trips to Brighton and Crystal Palace still to come. As for the Champions League, it’s now a distant dream for the club as they hope for a better season next time.
