Final Season of TV Show Empire Cut Short

The sixth and final season of TV show Empire, will end sooner than originally planned due to circumstances revolving around the ongoing coronavirus pandemic according to reports by Deadline.

Empire will be saying its goodbyes after the last completed episode 18, “Love Me Still”, which reveals the betrayal and crashed wedding of Taraji P. Henson and Terrance Howard-led hip hop drama.

Reports about the final ending of Empire were confirmed after viewers were suddenly hit by a voice-over that said, “Get ready for the shocking final three episodes of Empire,” during a promo for next week’s episode ‘We Got Us’, the 16th episode of the Fox series’ current sixth season.

The last completed episode before the coronavirus-imposed production shutdown, Episode 18, which is scheduled to air on April 21, is now set to be the premature end of Empire.

To help create a more seamless overall ending, we hear this newly minted finale will likely feature footage from Episode 19, which was halfway through filming when the health crisis paused all Hollywood production.

The show’s long intended ending, the series finale Episode 20, will never see the light of day for the once blockbuster.

Empire ending sooner than originally planned

The Empire creative team already had to change plans for the series’ final chapter when key original cast member Jussie Smollett abruptly exited last season in the legal aftermath of an allegedly staged hate crime incident. Now the show’s producers had to pivot again and create a new finale.

Empire among other TV series like Supernatural, have had their production deadlines impacted by the mass production shutdown in mid-March due the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, the premature end of the show may not mean the end of the franchise as Fox has been planning a potential spin-off headlined by Oscar nominee, Taraji P. Henson, which the series creators Daniels and Danny Strong are said to have embraced.

From Imagine Television in association with 20th Century Fox Television, Empire is executive produced by Daniels, Strong, Brian Grazer, Sanaa Hamri, Dennis Hammer, Matt Pyken and Diane Ademu-John. Brett Mahoney is executive producer and show runner.
