Spider-Man is breaking records at the Box Office despite the ongoing fears over the new Covid-19 variant that hasn’t stopped fans from heading to cinemas to watch the newest instalment of the franchise.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” has definitely done it this weekend as the movie reached for the top to become the top-grossing film of 2021 globally as many flocked to the theatres in numbers.
According to Bloomberg, on Sunday the film took in an estimated $81.5 million in domestic ticket sales in its second weekend. The movie, which was done under Sony Group studios and produced along with Walt Disney Co.’s Marvel Studios, had the second-biggest opening in Hollywood history last week, trailing only 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
Other movies that dropped during a similar time have had a tough time competing with Spider-Man: No Way Home, as it has taken up huge chunks of sales in the last few weeks leaving titles like “Sing 2”, which is targeted at kids struggling with just $23.8 million brought in so far domestically over the three-day weekend.
No Way Home revolves around Peter Parker’s secret identity being revealed to the entire world. Desperate for help, Peter turns to Doctor Strange to make the world forget that he is Spider-Man. The spell goes horribly wrong and shatters the multiverse, bringing in monstrous villains that could destroy the world.
The new Spider-Man features an all-star cast, including Tom Holland as the superhero, Zendaya as his girlfriend, MJ, and Benedict Cumberbatch as the magic-wielding neurosurgeon Doctor Strange.
Spider-Man: No Way Home tops Box Office earnings
According to studio estimates as of Sunday (26 December), No Way Home added $81.5m (£60.7m) over the three-day weekend, which is 69 per cent less as compared to the film’s performance on the first weekend.
Universal’s Sing 2 came in second place this weekend with approximately $23.8m, while Warner Bros’ The Matrix Resurrections took third place with $12m.
Spider-Man has also doubled the domestic grosses of 2021’s previous number one film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, in North American theatres. It is also additionally tied with 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, becoming the third-fastest film ever to touch the billion-dollar mark, and that too without the benefit of its release in China.
“This weekend’s historic Spider-Man: No Way Home results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve,” said Sony Motion Picture Group CEO Tom Rothman on Monday (20 December).
“All of us at Sony Pictures are deeply grateful to the fabulous talent, both in front of and behind the camera, that produced such a landmark film,” he added. “Thanks to their brilliant work, this Christmas everyone can enjoy the big screen gift of 2021’s mightiest superhero — your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.”
No Way Home was released on Thursday (16 December) after a long wait and much hype around its release due to the secretive nature of the film’s production.
