Yemi Alade is making big moves as usual as reports coming in point to the Nigerian music artist recording a theme song for a Cartoon Network animated series called ‘Iyanu‘ that has slowly gained attention from viewers across the globe.

Cartoon Network and HBO Max confirmed the reports in their recent announcement that pointed to Yemi Alade being the music artist picked to take on a recording and performing role for the theme song of Iyanyu, an upcoming superhero animated series deeply rooted in Nigerian culture and mythology.

The series is an adaptation of the popular graphic novel Iyanu: Child of Wonder by Nigerian creator and filmmaker Roye Okupe and is produced by Lion Forge Entertainment. The theme song is a collaborative effort between Yemi Alade, Lion Forge Entertainment, Alcon Sleeping Giant, and Femi Agunbiade, the lead composer for the series.

“I’ve been a big fan of Yemi Alade for over a decade, so I nearly fell out of my chair when I heard she would be a part of Iyanu. I’ve gone from blasting her hit single ‘Johnny’ in my car in 2014 to listening to her stunning lyrics on the Iyanu theme song. This is an absolute dream come true,” Okupe who is also an executive producer of the series said.

Yemi Alade to make a great addition to Iyanu

It’s awesome to know that comic book publishers Dark Horse Comics took a chance on Iyanu bringing it to life as a graphic novel before the idea of shitfting to the big screen came to light. The animated series has a total of 15 episodes slated for season one and we hope its renewed for another season. The addition of Yalade to the project signifies a huge achievement and shift that is slowly embracing more African stories on the big screen.

The animated series of Iyanu follows the journey of a teenage orphan girl with no recollection of her past, who suddenly discovers that she has abilities that rival the ancient deities of her people as she continues to discover the mystery behind her newfound power to save her people from an ancient curse. The show is set in the magical kingdom of Yorubaland.

The focal characters in the animation are voiced by an all-African cast with Serah Johnson as Iyanu, alongside Adesua Etomi-Wellington (Olori), Stella Damasus (Sewa), Blossom Chukwujekwu (Kanfo), Shaffy Bello (Emi), Okey Jude (Biyi) and lastly Samuel Kugbiyi as Toye.

Dark Horse Comics, which is the the third largest comic publishing company in the U.S has become a strong driver when it comes to publishing licensed material that often does not fit into mainstream media. The publisher is popularly known for its top selling titles such as Sin City, Hellboy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 300, Ninja Gaiden, and Star Wars.
