The singer announced that he plans to boycott the Grammy Awards and stated that he will no longer attend the award show or submit his music for consideration for upcoming awards shows, due to believing that he was snubbed in certain Grammy categories.
When the 2021 GRAMMY Award nominations were announced a few months ago, the world was shocked about how things were handled after one artist that was expected to top the nominations was completely snubbed from every single category despite having one of the top-selling albums of the year.
The Weeknd, who performed at the Super Bowl and left his fans awestruck not forgetting his continued efforts to top charts throughout the year left many surprised after he was left out of the nominations in all categories since his hit single, “Blinding Lights” was received with critical acclaim.
According to reports, he stated, “Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.”
He continued, “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans, and the industry transparency.
The Hollywood Reporter states that Harvey Mason Jr., the Recording Academy chief responded back to The Weeknd’s claim saying, “We can empathize with what he’s feeling… His music this year was excellent, and his contributions to the music community and broader world are worthy of everyone’s admiration. “
He also stated, “We were thrilled when we found out he would be performing at the upcoming Super Bowl and we would have loved to have him also perform on the Grammy stage the weekend before. To be clear, voting in all categories ended well before The Weeknd’s performance at the Super Bowl was announced, so in no way could it have affected the nomination process. All Grammy nominees are recognized by the voting body for their excellence, and we congratulate them all.”
After his recent snub at the Grammy nominations, and his speaking about the corruption. Other artists like Hasley share similar thoughts and believe the awards are full of corrupt officials and the process of nominations is no longer fair.
The Weeknd takes a stand against the Grammys and plans to boycott it for good
According to Hot New Hip-hop, The Weeknd has spoken at length about his feelings regarding being snubbed at the GRAMMYs, but in a new statement provided to the New York Times, he reveals that he will not be submitting his future music for consideration at upcoming ceremonies, effectively ensuring that he’ll never earn another nomination.
“Look, I personally don’t care anymore. I have three Grammys, which mean nothing to me now, obviously. It’s not like, ‘Oh, I want the Grammy!’ It’s just that this happened, and I’m down to get in front of the fire, as long as it never happens again. I suck at giving speeches anyways. Forget awards shows.” Said The Weeknd.
The question is, will this move make a difference and whether it will inspire other music artists to do the same. There is also still a lot of suspicion surrounding the Grammy nominations as many now believe the entire system is corrupt and broken.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think the stars move will invoke change?
