Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan Tests Positive for Coronavirus

Manchester City confirmed several hours ago that their midfielder Ilkay Gundogan had tested positive for coronavirus following the latest round of testing.

The midfielder has been put on a 10-day period of isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine that was issued months before sports activities resumed.

The news has been a devasting blow to Manchester City which now has no choice but to bench their key midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and follow up on the quarantine procedures that will also affect the entire team.

Gundogan is likely to miss three matches for Man City while under self-isolation, including Monday’s Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as Thursday’s Carabao Cup game against Bournemouth and Sunday’s league game against Leicester City.

The German is the third player of Pep Guardiola’s squad to test positive for the coronavirus, following the earlier confirmed cases for winger Riyad Mahrez and defender Aymeric Laporte. However, both players returned to training last week though only Mahrez will be available for the Wolves game.

Manchester City has had two players test positive for coronavirus making Ilkay Gundogan the third case so far

The 29-year-old is a regular starter in City’s midfield and made 49 appearances in all competitions last term as well as being a key part of the treble-winning side the year before.

Gundogan also started this season on international duty with Germany – playing in both 1-1 Nations League draws against Spain and Switzerland, and scoring in the game against the latter.

Manchester City gave no further details of Gundogan’s condition, only adding: “Everyone at the club wishes Ilkay a speedy recovery.”

How this affects Man City is still yet to be confirmed, as it begins its new Premier League campaign on Monday as they go against the mighty Wolves. They also still face a threat from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad which took out their chance for the league title last season after two successive seasons.
