Lionel Messi is not resting any time soon as the Argentine player keeps breaking record after record, and this time around he did it again after he scored in the 16th Champions League season as Barcelona beat Ferencvaros last night.
Messi became the first player to score in 16 consecutive Champions League seasons as he guided a 10-man Barcelona to a 5-1 victory over Hungarian side Ferencvaros in their Group G opener at the Camp Nou on Tuesday.
It was during the game that Messi struck from the penalty spot to give Barcelona a lead over their rivals. Ansu Fati landed in the second goal with a volley, with Philippe Coutinho adding a third giving them an edge over Ferencvaros.
Later on, Gerard Pique was sent off for a foul that gave Ihor Kharatin a chance to give his side a redeeming goal after he netted a penalty past Barca’s keeper. However, Pedri and Ousmane Dembele sealed the team’s win after they both scored.
The loss of Pique will affect Barcelona somehow as they go against a tough Juventus during game week two but none the less, they have Pedri, a young teenager that is showing a lot of promise and could be the answer they need to stay focus.
Pedri’s contribution to Tuesday’s game was one of the highlights, which kinda proved to be a serious rival to Messi’s headline of the evening, with the Argentine forward’s goal giving him a fair standing with Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs as the players to have scored in the most separate Champions League campaigns.
Messi also assisted the goal for Dembele, who stepped off the bench to add to what was a mood-brightening evening for the La Liga side, who have spent the summer trying to rebuild after their humiliating exit at the hands of Bayern Munich in last season’s Champions League.
Messi breaks record in Champions League against Ferencvaros
Barca has been having some issues during this league campaign under Ronald Koeman, and it made it worse when they lost to Getafe at the weekend.
Koeman, who has been trying to put the team back on the map felt that the Argentine’s performance against Getafe was lacking. He said that the performances of Messi, who spent the summer trying to leave the club, “could be better”.
However, during Tuesday’s game, the Dutchman’s perception changed and also said he did not believe Barca were favourites for either La Liga or the Champions League this season but that “we can go far”.
If Koeman continues to make use of Messi, including gaining more continuous support from the likes of Fati, Coutinho, Dembele and Pedri, the future of Barcelona may not be so doomed as many thought.
