Jacob Kiplimo Grabs Gold for Uganda

Jacob Kiplimo, a 16-year old, became the first Ugandan to win a gold medal at the World Cross Country Championships after his heroic performance in today’s race.

The Ugandan supporters made their presence known as they cheered on the teenage star athlete as he went to win gold in the U20 (under twenty) men’s race with a time of 22.40 minutes at Kololo.

Jacob was followed by the Ethiopia’s Amdework Walelegn who took silver while Kenya’s Kimunyan settled for bronze.

It was a tough race that saw the usual strong teams of Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea put on a tough fight but Uganda later managed to lead the pack.

Kiplimo stood his ground as he continued his amazing pace in the last minutes that saw Uganda take gold in the cross country championship.

IAAF World Cross Country Championships is the most important competition in international cross country running and is held annually.

The event is organised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and it was inaugurated in 1973. It was an annual competition until 2011, when the IAAF changed it to a biennial event.
