S.A’s Anti Apartheid Activist Ahmed Kathrada Dies

South African anti-apartheid activist and politician Ahmed Kathrada has died at 87 years in a Johannesburg hospital after some illness and a brain surgery.

Mr. Kathrada was one of the 8 African National Congress (ANC) anti apartheid activists with Nelson Mandela sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 for trying to “overthrow” the apartheid government.

He spent 26 years in prison, 18 of which were on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela who later persuaded him to join the government after his release in 1989.

Ahmed Kathrada left parliament in 1999, but remained active in politics, speaking against the direction of the ANC under President Jacob Zuma and calling for him to resign.

He will be buried on Wednesday, tomorrow.

South Africa has lost a hero. May his soul rest in peace.
