President Robert Mugabe Resigns

Zimbabwe’s first and longest serving president Robert Mugabe has resigned according to the parliament speaker Jacob Mudenda who made the announcement today.

Robert Mugabe’s decision to resign came as a surprise to many Zimbabweans. People across the country including the law makers were in jubilation as the shocking news echoed far and wide. Mugabe said in his letter that, he resigned voluntary so as to allow a smooth transition of power.

After serving for more than two decades and being one of the world’s oldest leaders, the 93year old finally called quits after last week’s military takeover and days of protests.

It’s not yet been confirmed who will take over power as the letter from Mr. Mugabe didn’t specify so either. In relation to the constitution, the current vice-president, Phelekezela Mphoko should be the one to step in.

According to Mr. Mudenda, measures are being undertaken to ensure a new leader steps in by Wednesday.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May said Mr Mugabe’s resignation “provides Zimbabwe with an opportunity to forge a new path free of the oppression that characterised his rule“.

Robert Mugabe has been in power since independence in 1980. However, during the past 15 years, his reign has been characterized by violence against political rivals.

So, what’s next for Zimbabwe? Will it have a peaceful transition? Or should we expect a similar a situation like that of Libya that fell into chaos after Muammar Gaddafi’s fall.
