Lionel Messi Breaks Record with 500 Wins and Goals Under His Belt

Lionel Messi has set another milestone record with Barcelona after scoring a brace in their 5-0 win over Leganes in the Copa del Rey. The 32-year-old is the first player in Spanish football to record 500 wins and score 500 domestic goals which looks unbeatable in the modern era.

Lionel Messi bagged a brace as Antoine Griezmann, Clement Lenglet and Arthur Melo were on target as La Blaugrana saw off their opponents to qualify for the quarter finals. The Argentine captain is now ranked above his former Barca teammates Xavi Hernandez who has 476 wins and Andres Iniesta with 459 wins.

According to Barcelona website, it took 710 games for Messi to reach that mark after his team bounced back from a 2-0 defeat to Valencia in La Liga over the weekend. Despite the convincing win, new manager Quique Setien was not still not satisfied with his team’s performance on the night.

“We did a lot of things well but I am not completely happy because we also lost control of the game in the latter stages of the first half.”

The defending champions will know their last eight opponents when the draws are conducted on Friday, January 31, 2020. Real Madrid, Valencia, Real Sociedad, Granada, Villarreal, Athletic Bilbao and second division side Mirandes are the remaining teams vying for honours in the Copa del Rey.

Barcelona will return to action in La Liga against Levante, a side that inflicted their second defeat in the league losing by 3-1 in the first half of the season.

Barcelona have qualified for the quarterfinal of this season’s Copa Del Rey after beating Leganes 5-0 at Camp Nou on Thursday night, January 30.

Barcelona refused to give Leganes any chance in the first half with the duo of Ansu Fati and Sergio Busquets controlling the midfield superbly for the Catalan giants. The hosts scored their first goal in fourth minute through France international Antoine Griezmann who powered in a superb strike sending goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar the wrong way.
