UK to Kick Off Brexit Today at 23:00 GMT

The United Kingdom will be making its final move towards Brexit today at 11pm GMT (2am GMT +3 standard East African time) with a video message expected to be released an hour earlier by Prime Minister Boris Johnson after three years of political wrangling.

The Primer Minister is referring the long awaited Brexit as a “new dawn” after three and half years since the passing of the referendum which saw a series of marches, celebrations including candlelit vigils held by both Brexiteers and pro-EU demonstrators.

According to reports, little is expected to change immediately as the UK begins a transition period that will usher in a new era for the region. Most of the European Union laws will continue to be in effect including the free movement of people until the end of December when UK aims to have reached a permanent free trade agreement with the EU.

The Brexit has had its share of media attention since its conception in 2016 with some against the move while others in support of UK’s decision to leave EU citing many benefits from it.

EU Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the country had to “move on” after Brexit and needed to “make sure we maintain good relations” with the EU and not “fall into the arms of a free tree deal with the United States”.

He added that Friday was “a very important day for everybody”, regardless of which way they voted in the 2016 EU referendum.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron, who led the campaign to remain in the EU during the referendum, called it a “very big day for our country”, adding that he believed the UK could “make a success of the choice that we made”.

The Brexit was originally scheduled for March last year

Last year, in the month of March on the 29th, UK had made a decision to undertake the Brexit but it was repeatedly delayed when MPs rejected a previous withdrawal agreement reached by the EU and former Prime Minister Theresa May.

However, Prime Minister Johnson was able to bring an end to more than 3-years of political argument when he pushed for the agenda through parliament after winning December’s general election with a House of Commons majority of 80, on a pledge to “get Brexit done”.

During the referendum, over 52% of voters backed the idea of leaving the EU which later gave a green light to the long awaited exit of UK.

“The most important thing to say tonight is that this is not an end but a beginning. This is the moment when the dawn breaks and the curtain goes up on a new act. It is a moment of real national renewal and change.” – said Mr Johnson as we await his video message which is to be aired an hour early.

The U.K. has been a member of the EU since 1973

Supporters of the EU are expected to take part in a procession through Whitehall at 15:00 GMT to bid farewell to the union while Brexiteers will later be expected to gather in Parliament Square for a celebration as they await the clock count down at Downing Street.

Britain will be exiting the bloc of 27 remaining countries including the bloc’s economic market of about 450 million people and will begin to forge its own way in the world.

The U.K. has been a member of the EU since 1973. Leaving is one of the biggest, riskiest and most divisive steps the country has taken in decades.
