Tennis superstar Serena Williams together with Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman and a group of others have decided to invest in a new Los Angeles-based women’s team to launch in time for the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League season.

Apart from Natalie Portman, Serena Williams’ two-year-old daughter, Alexis Olympia, is also among the list of owners that have invested in the women’s LA team, making her the youngest pro sports owners in history.

Portman, Serena and several other high-profile women, a part of the group that is behind the LA women’s team, making the founding team a female-majority group. The team name and home venue are yet to be decided, but the ownership group has called itself ‘Angel City’.

At the moment, California doesn’t have a team in the National Women’s Soccer League, which is soon going to change as high-profile women have decided to back the venture and the dream a reality.

NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird says the league has “long-sought” an LA-based team, which already has a “massive” interest in women’s football.

Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian, a co-founder of tech company Reddit, is part of the ownership group including their two-year-old daughter Olympia.

“Change for our players, change for our fans, and change for our community. Change that begins today.”

The National Women’s Soccer League announced that it had awarded the Angel City group the franchise for a new Los Angeles team, which will join the league in the spring of 2022.

“The growth trajectory of the NWSL is incredibly exciting, but we also need to be strategic and thoughtful about how fast we expand and the communities we partner with,” NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird said in a statement.

The new franchise will be the 11th team to enter the NWSL and will join the already established MLS sides LA Galaxy and LAFC in LA.
