Google Messages, a staple for the Android ecosystem, is said to be working on a new feature that will allow integration between it and WhatsApp, giving it the ability to access WhatsApp video calls. You definitely read that right, video calls.
Recent developments show that there have been code changes to Google Message’s APK, with the latest version showing new implementations that suggest that the messaging app will be able to make a WhatsApp video calls directly easily without any unnecessary workarounds.
How does the feature work? Well, for those who have received the latest update, have noticed that when you and your friend are chatting using Google Messages and both of you have WhatsApp, you’ll get a new option in the top right menu: a video icon, which, if you tap, says WhatsApp Video Call.
When you tap on the icon, it will directly start the video call in WhatsApp. This is currently only for one-on-one chats. For group chats (or if the contact you’re talking to one-on-one doesn’t have WhatsApp), the video call option in Google Messages will default to Google Meet.

Much as this is an exciting feature to have, let’s hope Google doesn’t decide to change its mind later on and kill the idea, as it has done before for several projects like Google Plus and Google Studio and many more.
Please note that there could be changes in this feature between now and when the actual release happens. Integration of both apps can take a different twist all together, and it would be nice to see more apps take on the same approach, such as turning a message into a note or converting it into an AI image or much more.
As we await the feature to be fully added, lets hope users can have the option to either use Google Meet or WhatsApp video calls depending on what they prefer without limiting their options. A clear date on when this feature drops is not yet clear, and we are hoping It’s soon, though it is still in active development and might launch in a few weeks.
