The Highly Awaited Google Pixel 9 Is Finally Here

For those who have been patiently waiting for Google to drop its Pixel 9 series, the wait is finally over. The company recently launched its flagship during its online keynote across the globe making it available in 32 countries.

Many expected the tech giant to launch the flagship in October but made changes this time around bringing the launch date closer to August. The Google Pixel 9 comes with a 6.3” OLED display coupled with a 120Hz FHD+ panel. This time around, Google has let go of the optical fingerprint sensor and has switched over to the more reliable ultrasonic kind.

In comparison to the previous model, the Google Pixel 9 seems a little larger than the Pixel 8 and 7 due to the small changes made to the screen making it a bit larger than last year’s model, though still a smaller smartphone compared to some of the market now having the same size (152.8 x 72.0 x 8.5 mm and 198g). If you prefer a larger model, you can opt-in for the Pixel 9 Pro XL or the Pixel 9 Pro Fold though that’s gonna cost you more.

The flagship also comes with a mid-frame that is made of aluminium, while the front and back have Gorilla Glass Victus 2 coupled with an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance meaning its outer body is more durable.

When it comes to the specs, the Google Pixel 9’s main camera is the same as last year’s having a 50MP camera based on the 1/1.31” Samsung GNK sensor (1.2µm pixels) and an OIS-enabled lens. The selfie camera on the front now has an autofocus lens but remains with a 10.5MP Samsung sensor. The ultrawide module, however, gets a notable upgrade with a 48MP sensor (1/2.55”, 123° lens), up from the 12MP (1/2.8”) module of the 8-series.

On the inside, the smartphone has gotten a notable upgrade in processing power having a Tensor G4 which features one prime Cortex-X4 core, plus three A720 and four A520 cores – making 8 more cores than last year. It also adds a more efficient Exynos 5400 modem while the GPU, the Mali-G715 remains the same with just an update to the clock speeds.

The Google Pixel 9 comes with more RAM and storage options

Another exciting feature this year is that the Pixel 9 comes with 12GB of RAM meaning that it would make the AI experience with Gemini much better given more memory is allocated to running different processes and applications. The flagship launches with Android 14 not 15 as hoped this time around though the OS upgrades are expected.

The battery capacity has been bumped up to 4,700mAh compared to the previous 4,575mAh with a 45W USB-PD charger giving it the ability to reach 55% in 30 minutes which is not a bad offer though other smartphone brands like Xiaomi, Samsung and the rest have better offerings.
