Nigerian Rapper Goldie 1 Sentenced to 10 Years in Jail

Nigerian rapper, Olawale Hassan also known as Goldie 1 has been sentenced to jail for 10 years in the United Kingdom after he was found guilty of rape.

The 34-year-old rapper found himself in a tough situation after the court ruling gave him 10 years for raping a woman, an incident that occurred in 2017. According to Birmingham Mail, Goldie 1 made advances to the woman at a venue in Southend in February 2017. It was revealed later that the rapper, who had decided to drive the lady back home, instead assaulted her.

Based on the witness reports, Goldie 1, who had promised to drive the lady back to her home safely instead took her to a car park where he overpowered her and raped her repeatedly.

Hassan was found guilty at Basildon Crown Court of three counts of rape and one of sexual assault, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said. He was sentenced to jail on Tuesday, October 6, 2020, for 10 years and two months.

According to further reports, before Goldie 1 rapped the woman, he had made advances to the her claiming he was a music producer. She later turned down his requests for her number and to accompany him to his hotel room. It is also reported that, after Hassan was done raping the woman, he eventually took her home after which she called the police to report the incident.

The Essex Police described Goldie 1 as “manipulative and calculated”. The police also stated that, he targeted his victim while she was out with a friend.

The rapper denied all three counts of rape and one charge of assault by penetration. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) found him guilty of the charges against him and he was sentenced to 10 years and 2 months in jail on October 6.

Helen Walsh, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said Hassan was a “controlling sexual predator who showed a complete disregard for the victim’s lack of consent”. Det Con Victoria De’ath, of the police force, praised the woman, in her 20s, for her “courage” in reporting the attack.

“She blamed herself for getting in Hassan’s car but has now recognised just how dangerous this man is and that none of this is her fault,” said Det Con De’ath. “She didn’t want him to hurt anyone else and this has been her motivation for three and-a-half years.”

Det Con De’ath added she hoped Tuesday’s sentencing at Basildon Crown Court would bring “comfort to this courageous and inspirational woman, who is now rebuilding her life knowing Hassan is safely behind bars.

Consent can be withdrawn at any time and at the discretion of the individuals involved. Just because you consent to dancing does not mean you consent to sex. The law is clear, sex without consent is rape and this case shows that where there is sufficient evidence we will not shy away from prosecuting the perpetrators of such heinous crimes.

We want every victim of rape to have the confidence to report what happens to them to the police. The police will investigate and gather evidence, and where there is sufficient evidence, the CPS will proceed to prosecution.

I would like to commend the emotional strength of the woman involved in the case for coming forward and I hope she is able to find a sense of justice in the sentence Olawale Hassan is now facing for his dreadful acts against her.”
