Cindy Sanyu Loses Her YouTube Account After Pissing Off Producer

Ugandan music artist Cindy Sanyu, found herself in a sad dilemma this week after she lost her YouTube account due to a saga that broke out between her and the production house behind her recently released video “Full Package“.

Word on the street is that Hilary Je, who is attached to the production studio called HJ Media Africa that shot the music video is responsible for taking down Cindy Sanyu’s YouTube account after the two failed to agree on credits and what is termed as disrespect to the producer.

According to Hilary Je, he requested Cindy Sanyu not to upload the Full Package video on YouTube without his company’s approval, which had planned to have the video released with credits for the post-production done by Hj Media. However, this did not go as planned as Sanyu went ahead and uploaded the music video without the production company’s approval.

Cindy’s bold move, which Hilary Je termed as disrespectful to him and his company started a storm of problems for the music artist. In response, Je informed Spurzine that once Sanyu went against the deal made between them, his first move was to act “diplomatic”, forcing him to contact YouTube to have her Full Package music video taken down including her account which had gathered lots of subscribers.

Talk about a kick in the gut! Losing a YouTube channel having that many subscribers over something that could have been resolved so easily must have hurt. We are yet to get a response from Sanyu’s management about the claims.

Why are Hilary Je and Cindy Sanyu at war?

Hilary Je is the wizard behind Cindy Sanyu’s “Full Package” music video and was the one who did all the post-production – showing his creative ability and talent with visual effects showing off the Wakanda, Matrix, Kardashian and Rihanna scenes that were all added during post. Je also stated that he was the one behind the VFX supervision, colour grading, and editing including the art direction of the entire project.

The reason why Hilary Je took matters into his own hands was simply that Sanyu did not honour her deal to have the production house credited for the work and to make matters worse, she deliberately uploaded the music video fully aware that she was in breach of the contract. This forced Je, who is a producer and director to reach out to YouTube and have her account suspended since he was not credited anywhere in the music video.

Hilary Je’s company, HJ Media Africa was the one behind the post-production and later informed us that they had included all the credits of the crew at the tail of the music video including the main director in the video intro, but when the video was uploaded to YouTube, the credits were taken off. Je also said that he took on the roles of Art-Direction, Visual Effects, VFX Supervisor, Animator & Compositor, Colourist and Editor, which is why he was not happy that Sanyu did what she did after all the hard work they put into the project.

Hilary Je’s response

Hilary Je says he took the only option he had using a professional approach, claiming his company wasn’t credited and neither was he paid for non-disclosure or there was no confidentiality agreement drawn up between Cindy Sanyu and the production house seeking to have all the rights of the production. This forced his company to take a different route hence having Sanyu’s YouTube account suspended after she uploaded the music video.

“Always projects that involve huge workloads and crew need to be credited and awarded for their work, but this did not happen. Our company HJ Media Africa was not even credited anywhere in the music video which was not professional at all,” said Hilary Je.

Hilary Je is the mastermind behind projects like Vinka’s Red Card music video, which was sponsored by Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), at the cost of 17 million Ugandan shillings. He has also taken part in other projects with the likes of Marvin Masoke of Swangz Avenue where he joined forces in directing the “Sabisubira” music video by Kabako. Hilary was also behind the visual effects for the Magazine music video by Zex BilangiLangi, Vinka’s “Njakusitula” and lately did visual effects for Cindy Sanyu’s Full Package music video.

This should be a strong reminder and warning to all those music artists who try to take advantage of production crews.
