American rapper Silentó who is popularly known for the hit single ‘Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae),” was arrested and charged with murder in the shooting that led to the death of his cousin, authorities said.
The 23-year-old Atlanta based rapper, who goes by real names Ricky Lamar Hawk, was arrested on Monday pending a police investigation into the death of his 34-year-old cousin, Frederick Rooks, according to a statement from the DeKalb County Police Department.
According to CNN, the police responded to a call about a shooting on January 21 which led to them finding a departed Rooks with multiple gunshot wounds, lying dead on a road in the Atlanta area suburb of Panthersville.
Based on the incident report from DeKalb County police, Rooks was pronounced dead at the scene immediately after they responded to the call.
Security camera footage from nearby homes captured at least one gunshot before several vehicles fled the scene at high speeds, according to the report.
“Today, Ricky Hawk, 23, was arrested for the murder of his cousin Frederick Rooks, 34. On January 21, the DeKalb County Police Department investigated Rooks’ death after he was found shot on Deep Shoals Circle. Hawk is in the DeKalb County Jail charged with Murder. #WeAreDKPD,” the tweet read.
Police said in a statement that Silentó was later identified as a suspect. Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the shooting.
Silentó was booked into jail on Monday and is currently being held there on a murder charge, jail records show. Authorities charged him with felony murder.
“After a thorough investigation, DKPD detectives identified Hawk as Rooks’ cousin, and the person responsible for Rooks’ murder,” the DeKalb County Police Department said in a statement. “Investigators are still working to uncover the motive for the shooting.”
Atlanta based rapper Silento suspected to be behind the killing of Frederick Rooks
Silentó is yet to give a statement as all efforts to attain a comment from his representatives have been futile. It should be noted that the rapper has had several run-ins with the law before in recent months.
According to CNN, last October, the rapper was arrested in Atlanta after driving 143 mph in a 65-mph zone based on the DeKalb County Police Department incident report. He was given citations for reckless driving, speeding, failure to maintain lane and improper stopping, jail records show. The charges are still pending, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Aside from that, Silento was also charged in September in Los Angeles with threatening two people with a hatchet. Prosecutors said that he reportedly walked into a stranger’s unlocked home on August 29 and attempted to hit two people with a hatchet before one of them disarmed him.
Silentó pleaded not guilty, and the case is still pending, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
With all the history and recent run-ins with the police, it’s not a surprise that the DeKalb County Police Department has arrested him for the crime as a suspect in the murder of his cousin Rooks. He may be innocent but we can’t really say so until investigations are done.
