African Union To Elect New Chairperson

The African Union on Monday will be holding an election in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to determine its next chairperson. The election race has seen a number of potential candidates step up to take on the position.

This is going to be a repeat of the election after candidates failed to win adequate votes in Kigali, Rwanda, last year and will the likes of Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed gunning for the chairperson position to succeed South Africa’s Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Amina is the only candidate from the eastern Africa region and once she lands the post, she will be the first person from the region to head the AU secretariat since it was established in 2002 and only the second East African chair in the history of the pan-African body initially known as the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).

The other candidates that were expected to fight for the post included Uganda’s Specioza Kazibwe who later withdrew from the race.

Amina faces strong competition as she has to beat Botswana’s Pelonomi Venson Moitoi, Equatorial Guinea’s Agapito Mba Mokuy, Chad’s Moussa Faki Mahamat and Senegal’s Abdoulaye Bathily.

We await to see how Monday plays out as the mentioned candidates go against each other in tough race to win the AU chairperson seat.
