Researchers Find Traces of Coronavirus in Semen: Can It be Spread through Sex?

A recent study revealed how genetic samples of the coronavirus were found in semen of patients infected by the virus. So, before you jump into your partner’s bed, take a moment to read this, then go ahead with your merry activities.

The world has been trying its level best to stop the spread of COVID-19 through social distancing, since it has been know to be passed from person to person through respiratory droplets. But, a recent study just discovered that semen may contain the SARS-CoV-2 virus, too.

You read that right. So, anyone who has been ruling out sex as a possible contender for spreading coronavirus can now stop yapping. Genetic material from the coronavirus was found present in ejaculate, according to a study published in the JAMA Network Open journal.

Based on the study’s findings, samples of semen from 38 people, aged 15 to 59, that had tested positive for COVID-19 were tested by researchers. It was later discovered that genetic material from the virus was present in the semen of six patients — about 16%. Four of those people currently had the virus while two were in the process of recovering.

The recent findings have sent shock waves through the medical community but there’s no reason for you panic just yet. Just because bits of the virus’s RNA were found in semen, it doesn’t mean that they could be infectious.

Genetic material of coronavirus found in men’s semen may not mean it can be spread through sex

According to Dr. Stanley Perlman, a professor of microbiology, immunology, and paediatrics at the University of Iowa, told The New York Times. “This is an interesting finding, but it must be confirmed that there is infectious virus — not just a virus product in the semen,” he said.

If the virus can be transmitted through sex — and that’s a big if — it’ll be “another item on the long list of reasons to use a condom,” says Holly Richmond, PhD, a somatic psychologist and certified sex therapist. The study authors agree. “Abstinence or condom use might be considered as preventive means for these patients,” they wrote.

None the less, there were other ways one could contract coronavirus during sex either from holding hands, cuddling, or kissing. So, unless people are going to be banging one another while wearing masks, then it won’t be sexy at all. Condoms of course are still highly encouraged in case you’re sleeping with someone who you haven’t been in quarantine with for a while.

There is also evidence of the coronavirus being found in faeces and urine too, which is why people have been asked to be cautious about the behaviours they’re engaging in right now.

At the moment, more research still needs to be done before conclusions are drawn about the subject of COVID-19 being sexually transmitted. But it’s important to always use a condom more especially if you’re sexually active.
