Face Masks During Lockdown Become A Political Problem

As Uganda implements different tactics to battle the coronavirus pandemic, with face masks among the mandatory items on the list. It has now turned into another political issue with people told to stay away from certain branded face masks.

According to Matooke Republic, the State Minister of Finance for Investment and Privatization, Evelyn Anite has sent out a warning against those wearing face masks with political colours and symbols.

Face masks are becoming a mandatory aspect for all Ugandans, with everyone expected to wear one while moving in public to prevent the spread of COVID-19 but now it seems the situation could turn into another dramatic political affair.

In a recent meeting with manufacturers at the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) grounds in Kampala, Anite advised them not to produce politically coloured masks since the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic is non-partisan.

“Even though you produce yellow masks, the government will not buy them,” Anite said.

Politically coloured masks are not allowed according to Anite

The Minister said the government is ready to support mask manufacturers financially through Uganda Development Bank. So, if you’re planning on making some cash out this venture, don’t go yellow, blue or red. There’s a high chance they may think it’s political.

Currently, there have been 260 confirmed cases of Covid-19 infections in Uganda with 63 recoveries. However, despite the low numbers in cases reported so far, we have already felt its negative impact on our economy.

The measures introduced by the government to counter the spread of the coronavirus have deeply affected the economy most especially the services and informal trade sector, domestic transport, retailers among others.
