Telegram is definitely making waves, as over 100 million new users joined the chat app alone this January, and now, it has added a cool new feature to its platform that allows users to move chat history from other apps.
The announcement was made today, with everyone that has updated to the latest version being able to bring their chat history – including videos and documents – to Telegram from apps like WhatsApp, Line and KakaoTalk. This works both for individual chats and groups too.
Telegram, which has been gaining a lot of traction over the years and is known for its privacy and freedom continues to grow with every passing day with more users joining the app almost every single minute.
It became even more popular recently when WhatsApp made a grave mistake a few weeks back with its naughty user privacy update that left many confused and worried about what Facebook is capable of when it comes to access and what control they have with your data.
It further reveals that once the changes go into effect, users will have no choice but to accept these changes if they wish to continue using WhatsApp. This caused a huge uproar in the tech space with Elon Musk taking to Twitter to tell his followers to switch to Signal while others made a run for it heading to Telegram.
Meanwhile, Telegram has capitalised on this and continues to bring forth more updates and better user experience, including user privacy and freedom all round and now in its latest update, one can move their chat history from apps like WhatsApp to it more easily. It’s like they are taking a direct stab at all their competitors without fear or favour.
According to the Telegram press release, to move a chat from WhatsApp on iOS, open the Contact Info or Group Info page in WhatsApp, tap Export Chat, then choose Telegram in the Share menu.
As for those on Android, open a WhatsApp chat, tap ⋮ > More > Export Chat, then choose Telegram in the Share menu so as to move your chat history.
New Telegram update allows users to move their chat history from WhatsApp and other apps easily
Once the process is the done, messages will be imported into the current day but will also include their original timestamps. All members of the chat on Telegram will see the messages. Awesome, right?
Indeed it is, and we can’t wait to try this out as soon as possible since some of us have never trusted anything Facebook has placed its hands on. If you feel you’re ready to make the move away from WhatsApp, this is the right time to do so.
The best part is that the messages and media you move don’t need to occupy extra space. Older apps make you store all data on your device – but Telegram can take up virtually no space while letting you access all your messages, photos and videos anytime you need them.
Technically, what this means is that most of your data is stored on their cloud servers and can be accessed at any time. Though some claim this isn’t safe since the data is in the hands of Telegram but the founder has continued to stress how it is the case and assures all users how their data is safe from intrusion.
With this update, you get even more control: secret chats, groups you created and call history can now also be deleted for all sides at any time. Telegram servers don’t store information about deleted chats and call logs, so the data will disappear completely, forever.
Other updates include improved voice chat features, greeting stickers, new animations, improved accessibility, better audio player and more ways to report fake channels that spread spam and other types of illegal content, including calls to violence or child abuse.
You can also report fake channels or groups that impersonate famous people or organizations by opening their profile page and tapping ‘…’ > Report > Fake Account to let Telegram know something fishy is going on.
