American rapper, Jay Z has vowed to ‘fight for justice’ and is asking the Attorney General to take serious action against all the officers that were involved in George Floyd’s death.
In a recent statement, Jay Z is taking a stand against the actions taken to prosecute the officers that were at the scene when George Floyd was begging for his dear life. He feels that all officers should have been punished and not only one.
The Minnesota governor, Tim Walz, revealed on May 31 that he had received a call from the rapper regarding the killing of George Floyd on May 25. The governor later on called in the state’s attorney general, Keith Ellison, to handle the prosecutions related to George’s death going forward.
However, the situation took a turn on May 31, when Jay Z decided to take things further by heading to social media to break his silence on the phone call between him and Tim Walz, and publicly call for justice to be served against the officers involved in the incident.
Jay Z wants justice served against all officers involved in George Floyd’s death
Since the killing of Floyd, only one officer by the names of Derek Chauvin has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. This has angered many people, who alongside Jay Z are calling for three other officers present at the scene during George’s killing to be prosecuted.
Officers Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane were all present at the scene during the killing of Floyd but yet haven’t been prosecuted like Chauvin. JAY-Z in his public statement called for tougher action against the officers.
“I, along with an entire country, call upon AG Ellison to do the right thing and prosecute all those responsible for the murder of George Floyd to the fullest extent of the law,” Jay wrote. “This is just a first step. I am more determined than ever for justice than any fight my would-be oppressors may have. I prevail on every politician, prosecutor and officer in the country to have the courage to do what is right. Have the courage to look at us as humans, dads, brothers, sisters and mothers in pain. And look at yourselves.”
The horrific video showing Chauvin keeping his knee on the side of George’s neck went viral, causing an uproar among the U.S. citizens countrywide. George screamed out, “I can’t breathe” while being handled by the officers.
The criminal complaint revealed that Chauvin had his knee on George’s neck for nearly nine minutes while officer Kueng reportedly held the deceased’s back, as Lane held his legs and Thao looked on from nearby.
Floyd’s death has brought about riots and protests across the United States, which began on May 26 and have now become widespread lasting for over six days now. Celebrities like Ariana Grande, Halsey, Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello and more have all taken part in protests in their respective cities.
Meanwhile, stars like Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Beyonce, Justin Bieber and hundreds of others have expressed their opinions on social media. If only such action can be taken in Uganda too, where many civilians including political activities have suffered grave injuries and even death at the hands of the authorities. Probably we would see some changes take effect.
