“I Want My Own Chief Cook In Prison” King Mumbere

Our own Kasese king, Charles Mumbere, gets a sweet deal to have a chief cook and other privileges added to his sentence as he serves his prison term.

The Rwenzururu king was arrested last month and charged with terrorism after a raid gone bad left over 100 people dead during the palace attack in Western Uganda’s Kasese district.

Caleb Alaka, Mumbere’s lawyer told the BBC he will ensure that prison officials comply with the court order though the prison authorities say an outsider will not be allowed into the prison to prepare his meals.

Mr Alaka said he initially thought there was a royal cook among those arrested but they had all “perished” during the raid on the palace.

The deal even included installing a fridge in the cell but we’re not sure whether the prison authorities will allow that. Charles suffers from hypertension and diabetes, he requested that his demands are meant for sake of his health.

We can’t say the same for the other inmates in prison who are badly sick and can’t even get a good day’s meal, such a move sends a bad message and shows how unfair the prison system in Uganda is.

The king is being held at the Luzira Maximum Security Prison in Kampala and it is not clear whether its about the terrorism charges or the charges over the murder of a police officer in March.
