With the rumor mills finally over, yesterday Sony unveiled the PS5 Pro in an online announcement, showing off what the new upgraded console looks like and what is expected under the hood, but the serious question by many fans was whether it was worth upgrading to.
Don’t get us wrong, we are excited about the PS5 Pro but not all the way through, and here’s why. For starters, the pricing is way off. It’s damn expensive and you might as well just buy a gaming PC. Secondly, Sony deciding to get rid of the DVD drive and the vertical stand, and instead charge for them separately is such an Apple move, and frankly, many are pissed.
Much as Sony giving us a PS5 Pro able to play games at higher resolutions while offering a better gaming experience is a bonus, the Japanese company has surely shot itself in the foot with this release this time around.
The PS5 Pro announced with better hardware upgrades
The PlayStation 5 Pro is expected to hit the shelves on November 7, 2024, for $699.99 ($700). The enhanced PS5 console comes with several significant upgrades designed to push gaming performance further.
One of the important upgrades added to the PlayStation 5 Pro includes a better GPU, delivering up to 45% faster rendering capabilities than the base PS5 model. On top of that, improved ray-tracing technology, and added support for machine learning – using an AI system called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to improve game visuals in real-time and increase resolution are among the major upgrades.
Mark Cerny, the lead architect behind the PS5, explained that these improvements were driven by developer feedback. The PS5 Pro aims to minimize the need for players to choose between performance and graphics modes, a common trade-off in current gaming experiences. According to Cerny, about 75% of players opt for performance over graphics, and the Pro seeks to bridge that gap, providing high-end graphics at smoother frame rates.
Also, existing gaming titles such as The Last of Us Part II, Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, are all getting updates from developers to be able to utilise all the power from the PS5 Pro. Sony’s Cerny also added that the console’s enhanced GPU will improve resolution and deliver a “sharper and crisper” experience for gamers.
Over 8,500 PS4 games will also be boosted with improved image quality, and many PS5 games will receive Pro-specific enhancements in the coming months.

A week back, a famous leaker had said that the Japanese company would make a low-key announcement for the console on its blog, unlike the previous releases, which came true including the announcement being made in September and the console being priced around $699. However, the reports of the console being released in both the Disc Edition and the Digital Edition did not come true as we hoped.
What is expected from the PS5 Pro
Aside from the price increase, the PS5 Pro will be a powerful console geared towards those looking for an upgrade and a better gaming experience. The pro version is expected to offer better graphics and performance than the original PS5. However, the specific details remain a secret though many of the PS5 Pro might support larger resolutions, faster frame rates, and possibly better 4K gaming.
However, details surrounding the GPU specifications are still under wraps, and expect Sony to reveal more soon though it might be built on the same AMD RDNA 2 architecture as the original PS5 but with improvements to it.
If you are one of those who decided to stick with the PS4 Pro before rushing to get the PS5, then this is your chance to upgrade to the PS5 Pro as it will offer a much better gaming experience over the older models for those who want to take advantage of 4K gaming that’s if the pricing fits your budget.
The PS5 Pro pre-orders will go live on Thursday, September 26. The console will be available from participating retailers and directly from PlayStation via PlayStation Direct.
